This form is designed for a range of circumstances where someone borrows a car of which they are not a title owner, for example:

• sending a car to college with a kid;
• driving an aging parents’ car; or
• housing a friend’s car in your driveway to avoid airport parking.

The reality in life is sometimes drivers get pulled over by the police, and accidents happen. If you are not the registered owner of the car, questions can arise including whether the car was stolen. This form gives both the car owner and the borrower peace of mind, because it will show the vehicle was borrowed with consent. It’s good to avoid those sticky situations!

In addition, this form was designed to protect both the loaner and borrower by helping them think through their agreement both as to expected costs (gas, insurance) and how unexpected costs like an accident would be covered. This form is especially useful for long loans and when last names differ.
